Entering last Friday’s road contest against Colfax-Mingo, Sigourney-Keota’s Isaac Bruns needed just 71 yards to reach 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

It didn’t take the Cobra senior long to accomplish that goal.

Bruns took the very first snap from scrimmage, 71 yards for a touchdown, spring boarding Sigourney-Keota to a dominant 62-26 victory.

“That was a benchmark Isaac was aiming for, he’s really kept his nose to the grind and has worked hard” said Sigourney-Keota head coach Jared Jensen. “He will be the first to tell you that he couldn’t do it without his offensive line. That’s what makes him such a great teammate.”

Isaac Bruns reached 1,000 rushing yards Friday night.

Isaac Bruns reached 1,000 rushing yards for the season Friday night.

Colfax-Mingo responded with a solid drive during their opening possession, but the drive ended in disaster when Sigourney-Keota blocked their field goal attempt.

Cobra sophomore Landon Conrad scooped up the ball and with a convoy of teammates by his side, returned it 80 yards - extending the Cobra lead to 13-0.

“That was a big momentum swing as they were having some success moving the ball,” Jensen said. “Our guys had enough knowledge to pick it up and run it back. It was a huge play early on.”

The scoring barrage continued through the remainder of the first half as Sigourney-Keota extended the lead to 49-12 at the break.

Bruns continued his hot streak finishing the game with 164 yards rushing on six carries with four touchdowns. He added two catches for 28 yards and a receiving touchdown to his stat line.

The Cobras running game has found its stride as they finished with 383 yards on the ground. A total of nine players carried the ball for Sigourney-Keota.

Sophomore Chase Clarahan had one carry for 54 yards and a touchdown. Junior Jacob Libe and sophomore Carson O’Rourke both had 33 rushing yards, Libe also had a touchdown. Senior Brady Clark ended the game with 24 yards of his own.

Junior Braydon Wood had one of his best games of the season completing four of five passes for 94 yards and a touchdown to go along with his three carries for 54 yards and a score in the running game.

Senior Brody Greiner had one catch for 34 yards while Clark finished with 32 yards on his lone catch.

Landon Conrad #38 and John Berg #25 close in on the Colfax-Mingo runner.

Leading the defense in tackles was freshman Aidan Greiner with five followed by Chase Clarahan with three.

In the turnover department, Sigourney-Keota had two interceptions by juniors Chase Haifley and John Berg.

The win, which was Sigourney-Keota’s sixth in a row, puts the Cobras on the cusp of winning a fifth straight unanimous District Championship.

A feat Coach Jensen is excited his team has the opportunity to accomplish.

“As the figurehead of the program this could be the validation of the effort and time put into these kids,” Jensen said. “This is a special program that has continued a long history of success and I’m proud to be part of that legacy. A lot of people have been a part of this and without the great coaches and players that come through here this wouldn’t be possible.”

The last hurdle to jump to achieve that District Championship is Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (2-5).

A team that, even despite their record and struggles, Coach Jensen expects a fight to come Friday night.

“They are a young and physical team, building towards the future,” Jensen said. “We expect a lot of physicality Friday night and have to make sure we keep our focus and take care of business before heading into the playoffs.”

Sigourney-Keota has won the last three meetings including last season’s 62-0 shutout.
