Starting the second half last Friday, September 27 Sigourney-Keota led rival Pleasantville 12-0 and that's when Isaac Bruns decided to put the early nail in the Trojans coffin en route to a 33-7 Sigourney-Keota victory.

On the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter, the senior Cobra broke a 47 yard touchdown run all but taking the wind out of any comeback sails Pleasantville might have entertained.

“Talk about a statement play. Once Isaac gets a field of green in front of him he’s almost impossible to catch.” said Cobra head coach Jared Jensen. “The second half couldn’t have started any better. They were keying pretty hard on our guards so we called a guard opposite and blocked it perfectly.”

The victory for Sigourney-Keota started slow with neither team scoring in the first quarter.

Despite the scoreless opening stanza, it was apparent the Cobras bruising running game was going to control this battle of contrasting styles.

Isaac Bruns had another stellar performance

Isaac Bruns ran for 210 yards against Pleasantville.

Midway through the second, Bruns picked up his first of four touchdowns on the night, an eight yard scamper. In total Bruns carried the ball 22 times for 210 yards.

As a team the Cobras ran for 329 yards, something Jensen equated to the dominant play up front by his offensive linemen, a quartet of seniors Landyn Greiner, Ashton Schwab, Billie Kindred, Jax Weber and junior Owen Menke.

“Our guys up front have grown a ton this season,” Jensen said. “It's exciting to see their success together and how much they mature each week. Without them we aren’t able to do what we need to do to be successful.

Cobra offensive line

The Cobra offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage Friday night.

Sophomore Ike Molyneux extended the Cobra lead to 12-0 with just under a minute left in the first half.

In the fourth quarter Bruns picked up his final two scores on the night helping push the Cobras record to 4-1 on the season.

Much like the offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday night, the Sigourney-Keota defense was in top form against a potent Pleasantville offense that was averaging 30 points a game entering the Snake Pit.

“That was good to see Friday night,” Jensen said. “There was a lot of planning and preparation heading into this game. We knew coverage and pressure were going to be huge and we did great at both. Especially putting pressure on their quarterback early, that was a big factor.”

Ashton Schwab and fellow senior Brady Clark led the team in tackles with four each. Meanwhile senior Caden Clarahan and junior John Berg both finished with three.

The Cobras caused two turnovers with Bruns and sophomore Carson O’Rourke both hauling in interceptions.

Carson O'Rourke

Carson O'Rourke had one of the two Sigourney-Keota interceptions against Pleasantville.

With the win, Sigourney-Keota now sits in the driver’s seat for a potential Class 1A District 6 Championship. Something the four previous Cobra teams were able to do.

“This gives these boys the ability and confidence to understand that they can be just as good as the teams that came before them,” Jensen said. “The way we won this one will help their mindset going forward.”

Upcoming this Friday, Sigourney-Keota hits the road for another big time District showdown as they travel to Pella Christian (1-4).

The Eagles are coming off their first win of the season and Coach Jensen feels this one will be all about confidence.

“They’ve had a tough schedule just like us, and coming off their first win will be playing with some confidence,” Jensen said. “Our confidence is high as well and we expect another District Championship type contest. We just need to keep playing like we have and keep up that momentum.

Sigourney-Keota has won three in a row in the series including last season's 42-15 home victory.
